SAS plane was forced to turn around – was on its way to Miami

An SAS plane has turned over Greenland due to severe turbulence.
The plane took off from Arlanda and was on its way to Miami – and is now on its way to Kastrup in Copenhagen.
– It is of course boring for those on board, says
Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, press manager at SAS.

The plane that took off from Arlanda on Thursday was on its way to Miami when it was suddenly forced to turn over Greenland.

– The plane has been exposed to quite severe turbulence and then you have to carry out an extensive investigation of it, and it is difficult for us to do an adequate one in the USA, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, press manager at SAS.

254 on board

Passengers will be replaced with hotel accommodation when they land in Copenhagen shortly before 11.30pm later this evening.

– They will go on a new flight tomorrow, says Lindgren Kaoukji.

254 passengers were on board and several of them experienced the incident as unpleasant, according to Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji. SAS has therefore deployed a special team, as is routine when this happens. No one is said to have been physically injured.

– But it is clear that people do not find it pleasant, and therefore we set up a special team. We help with what we can and make sure they feel good and come to a hotel when they feel they can, she says.

“The plane folded”

A passenger who The evening paper spoke to describes the flight as “pure horror”.

– The plane folded, all loose objects and drinks flew up into the roof. No one in the staff has experienced anything like this, the one flight attendant has worked for 35 years, the person told the newspaper.

“Generally not dangerous”

The severe turbulence was caused by jet streams that lie just off southern Greenland.

– As a rule, they are not dangerous, but sometimes at the edge of the jet stream you can get something called clear air turbulence, says TV4’s meteorologist Leon Lee.

– Aviation meteorologists can often predict this turbulence well, but sometimes you are unlucky and end up in such a turbulent area.
