“Our OB, his birthday was yesterday as well,” Amber Routhier said Tuesday. “The nurses and the staff were all excited and we were all excited wishing him a happy birthday and getting ready to welcome Riley.”
“So, it was a very fun day here,” she said.
Riley has a 17-month-old sister, Claire. Amber, a social worker, and Chris, a millwright at Cabot, both grew up in Sarnia.
Amber Routhier said Jan. 1 was Riley’s due date but they were surprised he ended up being the New Year’s baby.
“We got here about 5 am so we figured someone had probably already been born,” she said.
“I think it will be a super fun day for him and every year it will give us an extra reason to celebrate the new year,” Routhier said.

“The staff here have been lovely,” she said. “They put a package together with some clothes and some toys, a blanket, teddy bear, that was waiting in our room when we got back with Riley.”
Routhier said the new baby is doing well.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with lots of joy and positivity from our friends and family,” Routhier said.
She said they didn’t have a chance to tell everyone in their family about the arrival before news began spreading around the community that Riley was this year’s New Year’s baby in Sarnia.
“It’s a nice surprise for them” and many said, “it’s a great way for them to start their new year, as well, to hear such nice news,” she said.
