The annual fundraising 5k for Threads of Life, a national charity helping families affected by workplace fatalities, life-altering injuries and occupational diseases, typically starts from the Seaway Kiwanis Pavilion by the Children’s Animal Farm, said local organizer Mark Roehler.

Instead, amid about $840,000 in repaving work along park paths and roads, the Steps for Life initiative will start from the pavilion by the park’s accessible Rotary playground, he said.

“We won’t be able to go around Lake Chipican like we did before” because of ongoing construction, he said about the route. “It will be a little bit different.”

Work in the park is expected to wrap up before July 1a city official said.

Ace of Monday, 37 people had signed up and raised more than $9,400 toward this year’s $15,000 Steps for Life goal, Roehler said. Last year’s event raised $17,500

Hopes are to get about 100 walkers out May 4, he said, up from last year’s “very good turnout” of 91.

This year’s walk will be the 15th in Sarnia, a Threads of Life release said, noting past walks have collectively raised more than $190,000.

Walks honor lives lost and others changed by workplace tragedy, while promoting awareness about the importance of health and safety, it said.

“Our primary goal is to prevent (workplace tragedy) from happening,” Roehler said.

Signs will be set up on the day to show people the route, he said. There will also be a silent auction and refreshments.

Registration starts at 9 am, and the walk begins at 10 am
