Sarnia Rotarians will hold fundraiser for Ukraine

Sarnia’s three Rotary Clubs are teaming up with DeGroot’s Nurseries to host a fundraiser that will benefit humanitarian relief efforts for Ukraine.

On Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 from 10 am to 6 pm, 1,100 bags/bales of Premier Pro-Mix all-purpose professional potting mix will be on sale at DeGroot’s Nurseries. The potting mix is ideal for containers, is a preferred choice for potted flowers and plants and also can be used as a soil amendment and lawn top-dresser.

The price of each bag (equivalent to four traditional 28-litre bags) is $25 (no sales tax) and proceeds from the sale will be sent to Ukrainian humanitarian relief efforts.

Rotary members from the Rotary Club of Sarnia, the Rotary Club of Sarnia After Hours Club and the Rotary Club of Sarnia-Bluewaterland will be on-hand to greet clients, handle transactions, coordinate and load trucks.

John DeGroot, himself a Rotarian, said the clubs decided to make the fundraiser for Ukraine shortly after the war broke out on Feb. 24.

“It was just after Christmas that we began exploring options for a fundraising event to support the community work of Rotary. I offered to supply the Pro-Mix and the Rotary Clubs would coordinate, promote and host the event,” he said. “When the war broke out in Ukraine we met again and quickly concluded that we wanted to do whatever we could to support Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief.”

“Our club members are happy to get on board with this effort,” said Debbie Renaud-McDermott, president of the Rotary Club of Sarnia After Hours Club. “The pandemic of the last two years has made fundraising a challenge and now we are anxious to lend a hand and raise funds for an urgent and worthwhile cause.”
