Sarnia police probing arson lay charges against sod churning impaired driver

It was a busy weekend for Sarnia police, who say they are investigating an alleged case of arson linked to a suspicious fire, an impaired driving incident that tore up a lawn and broke wheels off a car, and an attempted theft at a construction site.

The arson investigation launched after police said in a social media post a suspicious vehicle fire took place Saturday during the early-morning hours. No other details were available and a call to Sarnia police headquarters Sunday for more information was not immediately returned, but police are asking for anyone with information to call Const. Mark David at 519-344-8861 extension 6194.

Few details were also available about the impaired-driving incident, but in a tweet posted shortly after 4 am Sunday, Sarnia police wrote: “Expensive outing – wheels to fix, sod to lay, impound fees, impaired operation charge. And yes, that beer can did come from inside the car.”

A can of Busch was seen in a photo included in the tweet lying next to a curb near multiple sets of tracks across an unidentified grassy area. In a second photo, a vehicle’s passenger’s side tires were significantly damaged – the rear was deflated and dangling off the rim while the front appeared to be broken off.

Finally, in a Saturday afternoon social-media post police published a photo of multiple DeWalt tools and said an officer spotted a cyclist leaving a construction site.

“On a weekend, with these items,” they continued. “Male arrested and charged. Items returned to contractor.”

Police did not say where the construction site was located.
