Linh Truong, a regular lottery player, said his decision to purchase the winning ticket from the London Road Petro-Canada came down to a few remaining dollars.

“This ticket was a random purchase,” he told Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. officials while claiming his prize of more than $ 457,300. “I bought my other tickets and had $ 4 left, so I figured I’d buy a ‘Lightning Lotto’ ticket.”

The top prize started at $ 125,000, but more than tripled before Linh won on Nov. 26. The restaurant employee said he was “very” excited when the store clerk told him he was the winner.

“My wife was surprised. I told her, ‘Honey, our dream came true,’ and she was laughing and crying, ”he said.

Linh said he plans to save the money for retirement.
