Sarnia man caught walking streets with hatchets and BB gun

Sarnia man arrested after police say a suspect claimed the hatchets, knife, BB gun and ammo he was carrying were woodworking tools was sentenced to 110 days in jail.

The incident last year was one of five cases that recently culminated in a four-month sentence for 26-year-old David Grego.

“It’s quite obvious that 2023 was a bad year for him,” defence lawyer Robert McFadden said, noting his client had a single prior entry on his record, which was for impaired driving.

Grego was first charged in January 2023 with assault with a weapon, uttering death threats, and breaching bail by possessing a weapon, police said. He was arrested again on July 24 on a bench warrant for failing to attend court and charged again with breaching bail by possessing a weapon, police said.

Grego was granted bail, but arrested again on Sept. 18 and charged with assault, assault with a weapon, and uttering a death threat. He was bailed again in October, but was back in custody in April on allegations of breaking the rules.

He recently pleaded guilty to charges from the cases, including assault, uttering death threats, and breaching bail. The rest of the charges were dropped.

“His behaviour is concerning,” assistant Crown attorney Ian Maedel said. “There is a pattern of violence here.”

He also pointed out the BB gun seized last July was loaded and police wouldn’t be able to tell if it was a pellet gun or a real handgun.

McFadden said his client has a problem with substance abuse.

“I fully understand the consequences of my actions and the severity of them,” Grego said from the prisoner’s box.

Both lawyers suggested the 110-day sentence, which Justice Mark Poland agreed to. He also banned Grego from possessing weapons for 10 years.
