Sarnia BB gun suspect faces new charges in alleged assault

A Sarnia-area man, charged after a reported BB gun shooting in south Sarnia and released on lease this summer, was back in court last week on unrelated assault charges, court documents show.

Jeremiah Fawcett, 43, faces two counts of assault with a weapon, allegedly a pipe and a dog, and single counts of assault causing bodily harm, carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose, being unlawfully in a dwelling house with intent to commit an offense , and failing to comply with a probation order, court documents show.

The charges relate to an alleged Jan. 9 incident involving a single complainant in a Confederation Street home, the documents say.

Sarnia police did not release details of this alleged incident.

Fawcett remains free on his existing lease terms pending a court appearance on the new charges next month.

Also next month, Fawcett is to appear in court on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, failing to comply with probation, and four counts of failing to comply with a release order in connection with an alleged incident in June.

Officers responded to a report of two men fighting near Talfourd and Proctor streets June 27, Sarnia police said.

A suspect was arrested about 750 meters away near Brock and Wellington streets and officers allegedly found a loaded, CO2-powered BB gun in his waistband, police have said. Officers also found hidden knives during a search.

The complainant, who had minor injuries, left because they didn’t want to be involved with police, police have said.

Police said at the time they couldn’t identify the suspect because the court document containing the charges hadn’t been sworn, but that document identified Fawcett as the accused.

After spending two days in Sarnia Jail, Fawcett was released on $500 lease including a weapons ban, with BB guns specifically listed. There were no exceptions for hunting even though Fawcett, originally from Aamjiwnaang First Nation, is Indigenous.

None of the charges in either case has been tested in court.

Fawcett was sentenced last fall to about a month in jail for convictions related to possessing a prohibited weapon and carelessly storing a firearm.

He’s also part of a grievance-stricken family upset by a 2018 manslaughter sentence handed down in the brutal daytime stabbing of their mother in Ottawa three years earlier.
