Sarnia area dream home lottery offering larger prize pool

Another $250,000 toward cancer care improvements in Sarnia is the aim in the latest Bluewater Health dream home lottery.

Tickets for a shot at a fully furnished three-bedroom bungalow at 7012 Blue Coast Heights in Camlachie, with deeded beach access, a protected woodlot and nature trails, theater room, game room and more went on sale Thursday, said Tabitha Brinn, with the Bluewater Health Foundation.

“The designers put a lot of work into making the house have, like, a cottage feel, the deep greens and golds throughout,” she said. “Absolutely stunning.”

Open houses start in October, she said, noting finishing touches to the home are underway by builder SGC Modern Homes.

The draw for the house, valued with furnishings at $1.2 million, happens Feb. 15, she said. An alternate cash prize is $900,000.

Vacations, vehicles and various other items also are up for grabs, along with early bird draws in a prize board topping $1.6 million, she said.

Last year’s lottery sold about 110,000 tickets and raised $500,000, split evenly between the Sarnia hospital foundation and one for Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia. Both are part of Bluewater Health.

Hopes are to sell even more tickets, capped at 150,000 this year, but end up with about the same amount of money for the foundations, Brinn said.

“We feel comfortable, while we continue to grow our prize board, that we continue raising that amount.”

The prize board includes about $200,000 more than last year’s, she said, noting the lottery and its prize boards have grown dramatically amid the introduction of online ticket sales.

Five lotteries ago was an 8,500-ticket sellout.

Money raised for Sarnia goes toward a $3.7-million campaign to update and expand the local hospital’s cancer care clinic in 2025, giving more space for the growing number of patients.

“We’re already seeing ticket sales coming in,” Brinn said hours after sales opened Thursday morning.

“We’re just very fortunate and we think this is going to be our best year yet.”
