Sarkozy sentenced on appeal to one year in prison including

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to one year in prison, including six months suspended, this Wednesday, February 14, by the Paris Court of Appeal, in the so-called “Bygmalion” case, on the excessive spending of his presidential campaign lost from 2012.

The firm part of the sentence imposed on the former president (2007-2012), who was sentenced at first instance to one year of firm imprisonment, will be adjusted, specified the president of the court while reading her decision, adding that the court had “returned to the quantum required at first instance by the public prosecutor”.

In September 2021, the Paris criminal court found the former President of the Republic guilty of having significantly exceeded the legal spending limit and sentenced him to one year in prison for illegal campaign financing. The court, however, requested that this sentence be directly modified, at home under electronic surveillance. Thirteen other people were also sentenced to sentences of up to three and a half years in prison, part of which was suspended.
