On Wednesday, she swims her first race during the World Cup.
The charge before the championship has been different from everyone before.
– I have never felt this fresh, says Sarah Sjöström.
No one else has won more World Cup medals than Sarah Sjöström. As many as 16 individuals have been through the career, and the Swede tops the list on the women’s side.
Brand new plan
There is no doubt that the 28-year-old is one of Sweden’s foremost athletes. There is almost no race where Sjöström is not the favorite to end up on the podium, and it is an expectation she always lives up to.
Last weekend, the long-distance track world championships began in Budapest. The Swede, however, has not swum a single race yet, and will do his first on Wednesday. Previously, she has always been at the start of the championship – but before this year, she has chosen to swim in fewer disciplines.
– I am very happy with this approach I have. It will be exciting to see how you can swim in 100 freestyle now that you are fresh in the championship. I have rarely swum 100 freestyle at championships when rested. Now I really have a completely different starting position, says Sjöström to SVT Sport.
“Never been this fresh”
Sarah Sjöström says that the new approach has been a success, and that she has never felt in such good shape before.
– I have never been so fresh at this time at a championship before. It is very nice. Otherwise, I tend to be quite tired at this point, she says.
She continues:
– The preparations have gone according to plan. It’s just to continue as I do now and we’ll see what the times show. If you look at what I did earlier in the summer, the times were pretty good. The hope is that I will be able to improve the times further now during the World Cup of course.
