During Saturday, Sarah Sjöström won her 20th individual WC medal in long track.
This means that she touches swimming legend Michael Phelps’ record.
Barely 20 minutes later, she struck again – with a world record.
– A good day at work, Sjöström said in SVT’s broadcast immediately after the finish.
Sarah Sjöström claimed the gold in the 50 meter butterfly with a time of 24.77. It was Sweden’s first medal from the championship in Fukuoka. The gold is Sjöström’s eleventh in the long-course World Cup, and also means that she touches the American swimming legend Michael Phelps’ record of 20 World Cup medals.
– It is fantastic. I am proud of the gold, which is my fifth, says Sjöström.
Broke the world record
But Sjöström wasn’t done there. 20 minutes later it was time for the semi-final 50 meter freestyle.
And there the success continued. She broke her own world record with the super time of 23.61.
Junevik’s first final
Saturday was a good day for Swedish swimming. Sara Junevik participated in her first WC final in the 50 meter butterfly and beat her own personal best with a time of 25.74. She finished sixth.
– Incredible. I gave my all, it’s so much fun, says Junevik.
Tomorrow Sunday is the last day of the championship. Sarah Sjöström has a chance to win new medals in the 50 meter freestyle final.
