Sara Junevik was the fastest of all in the absence of swimming queen Sarah Sjöström

Sara Junevik was the fastest of all in the 50 meter butterfly trials at the European Championships in Belgrade.

The 24-year-old swimmer was clocked in 26.01 and easily advanced to the semi-finals later this evening. Second fastest in the trials was Slovak Tamara Potocka in 26.12.

Sara Junevik is in advance Sweden’s biggest hope for gold in the EC and has a chance to win the first individual championship medal of his career as a senior.

The 50 meter butterfly is not an Olympic event, however, and Junevik hopes later during the EC to qualify for the Olympics in the double distance.

This year’s swimming EC is late and several stars, including Sarah Sjostrom, chooses to abstain because the Olympics in Paris await at the end of July. Sjöström is one of several Swedish swimmers who instead participate in the major competition Sette Colli in Rome during the midsummer weekend.
