Rasmussen: Ukraine to the EU and NATO

According to the press release of the President’s Office, the main goal of the working group is to develop a vision of how Ukraine becomes more closely involved in the Euro-Atlantic security area.

– Russia’s unprovoked attack against Ukraine has been a devastating blow to the rules-based global order. At the same time, it has weakened the foundation of the post-Cold War security architecture, Jermak said when opening the meeting.

According to Rasmussen, the country’s new security architecture should be based on three main points. The first of them is the system of long-term security commitments for Ukraine, the second is EU membership and the third is NATO membership.

– We need a clear vision of Ukraine’s future security arrangements to make it clear to Putin that he will not be allowed to achieve his war goals, Rasmussen said.

According to Rasmussen, who served as the general secretary of the military alliance in 2009-2014, one of the most important tasks of the working group is to find out whether the conditions for Ukraine’s accession to NATO are met.
