A sprinter Samuli Samuelsson28, started a week-long training break after last weekend’s WC indoor competitions, as he had already given up hope of a place in the WC.

However, the holidays changed in one fell swoop when he answered the phone on Wednesday while on a shopping trip. The caller was the national team boss of the Finnish Sports Association Jani Tanskanenwho said that a place has opened up for Samuelsson in the 60 meters of the World Championships.

– It came completely from behind the tree. Of course, I want to go to the world championships when the invitation came. A pleasant surprise, says Samuelsson.

†The system is completely broken.â€

Samuelsson competes in the 60-meter sprint at the World Cup arena in Glasgow, where a total of 56 runners were entered. The preliminary heats will be run on the opening day of the games, Friday next week.

Samuelsson clocked 6.65 at his best this season. A direct race place would have required stretching to the SE time, because the result limit of 6.58 in the MM halls is the same as Markus Pöyhönen Finnish record in the name.

Samuelsson’s place opened up through the ranking system, which he did not expect at all based on his own ranking. The entry ticket to the games came off because a significant number of runners ahead of him left the races. Some of the athletes who achieved a result that entitles them to the Games do not compete at all in the hall season, some focus on the summer competitions and some are injured.

Samuelsson thinks that the place opened partly also because some countries do not send athletes to the Games who were not in the ranking when it closed.

– I was just wondering how much of the previous group has been left out of that ranking. I’m not a fan of this ranking system. Of course, I’m happy that I made it to the World Championships, but I would have liked to get a place in a slightly different way. The system is completely broken.

One more chance

Last weekend, Samuelsson grabbed his sixth indoor track championship gold from the Tampere Indoor Games. At that time, the clocks stopped in the final at 6.71. The runner was not satisfied with the result.

– The WC halls did not go very well, but before that the whole training season has been better than ever before. That’s why expectations were high.

– With the coach, it was expected that all areas would fall into place. However, that has not happened at any point during the Halli period.

The World Championships are Samuelsson’s first in his career. European Championship experience has been accumulated both indoors and outdoors, but now the runner gets to show his speed also in the World Championship arena.

– Now we are given one more chance to succeed in this government period. And what better place to do that than the world championships.

Samuelsson believes that he has good conditions to succeed. He emphasizes that the fast travel is all about the little things.

– I can reach the semi-finals if I run my own record in the heats. At 60 meters, anything can happen.
