Korean users of Samsung Galaxy smartphones are not happy and make it known on the forum meeco. They complain about the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) application which is installed by default on certain models and cannot be deactivated.
This application, supposed to optimize the games, also acts on other programs. In fact, it limits performance (throttling in English) of 10,000 Android applications, some of which are very well known, such as Instagram, TikTok, Netflix or even Microsoft Office. Even Samsung apps such as Secure Folder, Samsung Cloud, Samsung Pay, and Samsung Pass are affected.
Samsung created an app called GOS and used the app to limit game performance, making the gaming experience worse. However, according to what the Korean community found out today, Samsung confirmed that it has put performance limits on more than 10,000 apps… pic.twitter.com/U58AreZZoo

On the other hand, benchmark apps such as 3DMark, Antutu, PCMark, GFXBench and GeekBench 5 are not affected. This gave the idea to a Korean YouTuber to change the name of the 3DMark test package to be taken into account by GOS.
In the video, we can see at 47 seconds that the test score WildLife Extreme then goes from 2,618 points to only 1,141 points, when the Game Optimizing Service app limits performance. The OnePlus manufacturer had a similar strategy for its 9 and 9 Pro models.
The goal for Samsung would be to find a good balance between the performance and the autonomy of its smartphones, in particular those equipped with powerful SoCs such as the Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. But that means in this case that the performance measures provided by the benchmarks are not representative of what users will get with their devices in reality.
