South Korea-based technology giant Samsung shared the results of its detailed sleep research today.
The following was explained in detail by Samsung Türkiye on this important issue regarding quality of life: “In the modern world, the fast pace, stress and the need to be constantly connected, as well as the conveniences brought by developing technology, negatively affect the sleep patterns and quality of many individuals. City life, increased screen use, increased social media use and busy work life have an impact on sleep routines. With the influence of all these factors, having healthy sleep habits has become one of the most important elements of modern life. Nowadays, the number of people who prioritize sleep to be healthy is increasing. The growing interest in sleep is also evident from the latest trends observed in the Samsung Health app. According to data obtained by the Samsung Health application, the number of users who actively track sleep at least once a week within a year has increased by 182% in the last two years. But the question remains: Are we sleeping well?

To answer this question, Samsung conducted one of the largest sleep health studies ever conducted. The study analyzed 716 million nights of sleep behavior of Samsung Health users worldwide. Although interest in personal sleep health is rapidly growing, the truth is that people’s quality of sleep at night is actually declining. The world is facing a sleep dilemma…”
The prominent findings of Samsung’s research are as follows:
- -Less sleep: The average sleep duration worldwide decreased from 7 hours 3 minutes to 6 hours 59 minutes, below the 7 hours recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.
-Decline in productivity: A worrying issue is that the time spent awake in bed increases during the sleep process, leading to a decrease in sleep efficiency. This means individuals spend more time in bed but sleep less. Sleep efficiency, which continues its downward trend in men, also decreased significantly in women last year. Older demographic groups exhibited a greater decline in sleep efficiency. Especially in individuals over the age of 70, almost twice as much decrease was recorded compared to individuals in their 20s. North America experienced the largest decline in sleep efficiency, while Asia remained the lowest. In all regions except Europe and North America, sleep duration was recorded below seven hours.
Inconsistent sleep patterns are also among the factors affecting sleep quality. Sleep deprivation, a measure of sleep discrepancy that shows the difference between weekday and weekend sleep durations, has a negative impact on sleep problems around the world. Sleep deprivation is most common among young people.
Those in their 20s are almost twice as likely to suffer from sleep deprivation as those in their 70s. This value is measured as 49 minutes in young people and 29 minutes in elderly people. Looking at the regions, Asia has the shortest sleep duration at 41 minutes, and Latin America has the longest sleep duration at 47 minutes. Worldwide, people sleep an average of 44 minutes more on weekends.
To gain deeper insight into common sleep patterns around the world, Samsung analyzes different sleep types and categorizes them with the Sleeping Animal Symbol. Each of the Eight Sleeping Animal Symbols represents a different sleep pattern with unique characteristics that collectively affect sleep quality, such as sleep duration, consistency, and time awake.
Interestingly, the majority of users, accounting for one-third of respondents worldwide, identify with the sleeping style in the “Nervous Penguins” category. Although these people maintain their 24-hour/circadian rhythms in a healthy way, they experience frequent interruptions during sleep, which reduces sleep efficiency. This coincides with the downward trend in sleep efficiency observed over the past year.
- -Older users are categorized as “Cautious Deer” at a higher rate than others. This means that sleep time is shorter and awake time is longer. The Sleeping Animal Symbol of almost 40% of users in their 70s was “Cautious Deer”. The rate is almost 10 times higher than for users in their 20s. The match rate with this sleeping animal symbol shows a steady increase as the age group increases.
- -People in their 20s are more likely to be matched with the “Sensitive Hedgehog” and are more likely to be categorized with the “Sun Aversion Mole” Sleeping Pet Symbol than older age groups. These categories of people with sleep consistency issues are becoming increasingly common as age demographics decrease.

In addition to the Sleeping Animal Symbol, there are also a number of Sleep Coaching programs aimed at improving sleep quality. Working with a strong commitment to the idea that small changes to daily habits such as getting out of bed quickly in the morning, having a regular wake-up time, staying active throughout the day, and so on can result in better sleep quality, the program provides users with motivating sleep that is customized to their unique animal sleep type and lasts for a month. He offers his coaching services directly from the watch on his wrist.
Following Samsung’s Sleep Coaching activity, it has seen many users move to higher Sleep Pet Symbol levels with the coaching service. For example, if you are a “Crocodile on the Hunt” at level 3, the coaching received is considered effective when you move to a higher Sleeping Animal Symbol at level 1 or 2.
Looking at the results, it seems that sleep coaching really works. The positive evolution of matching the Sleep Animal Symbol as a result of adopting better sleep habits shows that Sleep Coaching is effective.
- -Some users found that the more they participated in the Sleep Coaching program, the more their sleep quality improved. The Sleeping Animal Symbol of those who were not satisfied with just 1 month and received 2 months of coaching increased better.
- -94% of users matching the most substandard Sleep Animal Symbol, the “Tired Shark,” describing those who are severely sleep deprived and unable to achieve quality sleep, experienced improvement with just two months of Sleep Coaching.
