Samsung in turn unveils its own language model, Gauss, which the manufacturer intends to integrate into its next devices. Starting with its Galaxy S24, which will feature Galaxy AI, its first generative AI in the cloud and locally.
From the start of the AI race, launched by ChatGPT and in which Microsoft and Google were involved, Samsung had expressed its interest in the technology. The Korean manufacturer had notably integrated SwiftKey, the mobile keyboard powered by Bing Chat from the Redmond firm, into all its Galaxy devices by default. This time, it seems determined to also become a key player in the artificial intelligence sector. He therefore took advantage of his Samsung AI Forum 2023 event to formalize Gauss, his own language model. Currently reserved for company employees, it should soon arrive on Galaxy devices. At the same time, Samsung took the opportunity to present Galaxy AI, a “universal intelligence” which will be directly integrated into its future high-end smartphones.
Samsung Gauss: the language model for Galaxy products
Gauss is the new LLM (Large Language Model, or large language model in French) from the Korean manufacturer. It is the equivalent of GPT from OpenAI, PaLM 2 from Google or even LLaMA 2 from Meta. It owes its name to the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, whose work formed the basis of the development of artificial intelligence. As the company explains in a blog postSamsung Gauss is capable of generating text, computer code and images using the three tools that compose it.
The first, Samsung Gauss Language, is a chatbot similar to ChatGPT. It can answer questions and be used to increase productivity, whether by writing emails, summarizing documents or translating various content. The second, called Samsung Gauss Image, can, like DALL-E or Midjourney, generate images from a prompt. It also allows you to edit them, for example by converting low-resolution images to high resolution, changing their style or making additions. Finally, Samsung Gauss Code specializes, as its name suggests, in computer programming assistance. It can describe code and generate code tests. For the moment, Samsung Gauss is only used internally to improve employee productivity, but it will soon be integrated into several of the brand’s products.
Galaxy AI: local and cloud AI
But the surprises do not stop there ! Shortly after, Samsung unveiled Galaxy AI, a new AI that will equip future Galaxy S24s. “Galaxy AI is universal intelligence on your phone like you’ve never seen before. Wherever it matters most – from barrier-free communication to simplified productivity to unconstrained creativity – we’re unlocking new possibilities.”indicates the company in a blog post. Unlike most AI tools, Galaxy AI not only runs on Samsung’s servers, but also on its products. In fact, the new AI will exploit both the power of the cloud and the computing power of the future Galaxy S24, thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the new high-end mobile chip from Qualcomm, which has units specially designed to do run AI locally.
One of the flagship functions of Galaxy AI is undoubtedly the AI Live Translate Call, which will allow live translation of voice calls into a foreign language, in the form of text generated during the discussion. As the translator will be integrated with the native calling feature, there will be no need to use any third-party apps. “Audio and text translations will appear in real time as you speak, making calling someone who speaks another language as easy as turning on subtitles when you’re streaming a show”, boasts Samsung. The company assures that these conversations will remain private since they will never leave the phone.
Samsung has not yet indicated which devices will benefit from this new feature. However, the manufacturer has already announced that Galaxy AI will be available in early 2024, which corresponds to the launch window of the Samsung Galaxy S24. In any case, the integration of this artificial intelligence should be a strong selling point for the company!
