Samsung is also launching its mixed reality headset Apple better

The war between Apple and Samsung begins a whole new chapter. Samsung plans to launch its own mixed reality headset on the market, entitled Project Moohan.

This is news that risks overshadowing the latest Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro. The XR helmet from the brand with the bitten apple, which made the rounds on social networks at the beginning of the year, risks losing its splendor very soon. A potential major competitor is currently in production.

This future XR headset is the result of a collaboration between Samsung, a South Korean company, and Google, an American firm owned by Alphabet. The high-tech gadget, poetically titled “Moohan” (meaning “infinite” in Korean) should soon establish itself in the high-end XR headset market.

A helmet that focuses a lot on design

Clean and minimalist, the Moohan intends to stand out from Apple and Meta thanks to a refined and eye-pleasing design. With its gentle curvatures and graceful shapes, Samsung relies on first impressions. The device also aims for optimal comfort for its users, with lightness and ergonomics unpublished. Ambitions that could not be more relevant given the criticisms which had targeted the destabilizing weight of the Apple Vision Pro.

Unrivaled performance

The technical specifications of the Moohan promise a legendary mixed reality experience. The device will support chip Qualcomm XR2 Gen 2, which is better than the one used in the Meta Quest 3. Thanks to this optimized chip, performance should be 20% higher.

The Moohan screens will benefit from a resolution reaching 4.3K per eye at 90 IPS (Frames Per Second). The field of vision should be wide, much wider than that of Apple’s XR headset.

As for the autonomy of the Moohan, users will have to manage an interchangeable external battery, as with the Vision Pro. Finally, the helmet can be used both with a light seal and without, an astonishing feature to say the least.

A panel of applications from Google

Samsung and Google will make a wide range of software available. Because it runs Android XR, the Moohan is designed to accommodate all Android applications and all Google services such as Maps, Chrome, Google TV and YouTube.

Artificial intelligence will unsurprisingly play a huge role in Samsung and Google’s Moohan. The helmet will benefit from a major advantage: Gemini. At the cutting edge of the latest technologies, Google’s AI offers a whole set of features reminiscent of science fiction films, such as instant and automatic subtitling when a foreign person is speaking right next to you. The translation, which targets both conversations and texts, appears at the bottom of the field of vision.

The Moohan integrates eye and hand tracking, for ever more optimized navigation. Nothing prevents users from using voice to chat with Gemini, whether to give it commands or ask for any information.

Who says high-end, says high budget

If the price of the Moohan has not yet been officially communicated, Samsung and Google intend to once again dethrone Apple’s XR headset by offering a lower price. This therefore means that it will not exceed the €3,999 mark of the Vision Pro. The South Korean brand is showing lucidity by considering that the high price of XR helmets is a considerable barrier to purchasing.

The Moohan is expected to be on sale by the end of 2025.
