After announcing its Galaxy S last month, Samsung presents its two models of the Galaxy A range, less prestigious smartphones, but much larger. After the Galaxy A32 (5G or not) and A52 5G from last year, two devices logically take over: the Galaxy A33 5G and A53 5G. No successor to the A72, this previous terminal was too close to the Galaxy FE. The question is therefore to know “what changes between the 2021 generation and the 2022 generation? “. Two answers: not much and a lot of things.
A53 5G, the cushy father
On this model, the only real notable change is the change of technical platform: exit the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G engraved in 8 nm, hello the in-house Samsung Exynos 1280 processor. An octocore ARM chip of which we have no other details than its engraving in 5 nm – which is not much. Coupled with the small battery boost – 5000 mAh instead of 4500 previously – this allows Samsung to boast up to two days of use without recharging for the Galaxy A53 5G. A variable value depending on usage and which does not specify whether the measurements were made with the screen set to 120 Hz or lowered to 60 Hz.

For the rest, the copy remains the same compared to 2021: the same front and rear camera modules, IP67 certification, Gorilla Glass 5 glass, two SIM slots including one Micro SD compatible, 4K30p video, USB-C socket only USB 2 compatible , the same RAM/ROM options (6GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB), the same 120Hz 1080×2400 Super AMOLED display, and more.
In short: the same as last year, but with a less energy-consuming processor and a new battery with 10% more capacity.
A33 5G, the big winner
If the A53 5G is the best equipped of the two terminals, the A33 5G is the big winner of this new batch. Goodbye the MediaTek Dimensity 720 5G processor engraved in 7 nm, it recovers the same Exynos 1280 chip from its big brother. The very mediocre 60 Hz LCD screen in 720 x 1600 pixels of the previous generation goes to Super AMOLED 1080×2400 in 90 Hz, the device is finally IP67 certified and it receives 6GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage (instead of 4GB/64GB in the basic version last year).
The photo part does not move except for one detail: the main wide-angle camera module receives an optical stabilization lens, which should improve everyday images by limiting blurring related to the movements of the operator.

The A33 5G will therefore be as efficient as its big brother, and apart from the photo and 120 Hz screen, offers very similar equipment, for less. Both terminals are launched under Android 12 with OneUI 4.1 and will benefit from 4 years of major updates (versions of Android) and 5 years of security updates. It’s not as good as iOS, but it’s not bad.

- The Galaxy A53 5G will have two versions: 6GB/128GB at €459 and 8GB/256GB at €519.
