Sami villages have 42 ongoing land processes in Swedish courts

Sami Radio has asked all general courts, administrative courts and land and environmental courts to seek cases where a Sami village appears as one of the parties.

A total of 42 ongoing processes have been found up to October this year where Sami villages are parties to legal processes concerning land issues, and since 2018 there have been a little over 200 processes.

Jon Mikko Länta, chairman of Jåhkågasska Sami village, testifies to a steady stream of cases for the Sami village to handle.

– It is constantly increasing from year to year. Our Sami village has approximately 400 intrusions per year that the board works with, he says.

Niila Inga in Laeva’s Sami village also sees an increase.

– Right now we have four cases that are up in court. It has increased more and it has more to do with the fact that we see no other way out because politicians don’t seem to look after the interests of reindeer husbandry at all, he says.
