Same-sex couples in Hong Kong will be allowed to form partnerships. This was decided by the country’s highest court on Tuesday.
However, full marriage rights for same-sex couples will not be granted.
Support for same-sex marriage has steadily increased in Hong Kong in recent years, especially among the younger population.
In 2019, same-sex couples who married abroad were granted the same rights as other couples, which was seen as a major advance for homosexuals in the country.
Hong Kong only decriminalized homosexuality in 1991.
Corrected: In an earlier version, the wrong name for partnership was stated.
