In Supernatural, Dean is the impulsive cool brother, while Sam approaches many situations a little more coolly and smartly. But during his audition, Jared Padelecki, the actor who plays Sam, wanted to be a little too cool and almost lost the role.
What is Supernatural? The series revolves around the lives of Dean Winchester, played by Jensen Ackles, and Sam Winchester, played by Jared Padelecki. The two search for their father and hunt supernatural creatures on their journey.
In the 15 seasons between 2005 and 2020, Supernatural became a cult series and this is also due to the charm of the two main actors. Jared Padelecki almost didn’t get the role of Sam because he wanted to be too cool during the audition.

How did the first audition for Jared Padelecki go? In the interview format of Michael Rosenbaum Inside of You, Jared Padelecki also talked about his first audition for Supernatural. That didn’t go so well, because Eric Kripke, the creator of the series, didn’t want him at first because he didn’t seem intelligent enough.
Padelecki explains in the interview that in the early 2000s, if you looked like Michael Rosenbaum or Jared Padelecki, you were expected to play broody at auditions. Translated, that means thoughtful or brooding and refers to a mysterious, cool aura. That seems to have worked back then. You were supposed to play James Dean.
After his audition, however, criticism arose that Kripke was more interested in an intelligent guy, similar to David Duchovny. Padelecki does not seem to have exuded this quality during the audition. But his manager saved him.
The manager called Kripke and told him how smart Padelecki actually was. He got a very good score on the SAT, a test for college applicants in the USA. He had a scholarship and was a debating champion. Kripke then gave him another chance to audition.
Interestingly, Padelecki says in the interview that it was probably mainly Eric Kripke who didn’t like the fact that he was pretending. His manager then told him to go back and be smarter.
At the second audition, he is said to have talked about literature and Shakespeare. That apparently worked, because he got the iconic role.
