Italy’s 1990 World Cup hero Salvatore Schillaci has died at the age of 59.
In 1990, the winner of the World Cup goal scoring crown Salvatore Schillaci has died at the age of 59.
According to the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Schillaci had long suffered from colon cancer.
Schillaci is best known for his national team achievements and specifically for the 1990 home World Cup. He started the tournament as a substitute, but rose to the starting line-up and scored a total of six goals on Italy’s way to the bronze medals. Schillaci was chosen as the best player of the tournament.
During his club team career, Schillaci, who was born in Palermo, represented Juventus and Inter, among others. He won the Uefa Cup once in both teams.
