Salvation Army Christmas kettle campaign officially launches in Sarnia

Services the Salvation Army Christmas kettle campaign funds to help those struggling financially are needed in the Sarnia area now more than ever, says Sarnia’s mayor.

Mayor Mike Bradley stopped to make a donation during Thursday’s official kickoff for the campaign aiming to raise $165,000 locally this year for the Salvation Army food bank and other family services programs, including help with vision and dental care, rent and utilities, emergency relief and more .

“This is probably going to be their toughest year ever,” Bradley said. “We’re seeing it right across the community, right across Canada. The food banks are in desperate need of support.”

“Hopefully, people who can give, will give to help them,” he said. “Whatever you give to the Salvation Army comes straight back into the community to help those in need, and they do a remarkable job.”

Volunteer Jim O’Rourke was on duty Thursday at the kettle at the Real Canadian Superstore where the kickoff was held.

“I came to Canada 17 years ago,” said the native of Scotland. “Canada has been good to me, so it’s good to give a wee bit back.”

Kettles in Sarnia are accepting donations, 10 am to 8 pm, Thursday to Saturday in November and then Monday to Saturday in December until Christmas Eve at Metro Northgate, Superstore, Lambton Mall, Canadian Tire and Walmart.

No Frills in Corunna collects donations at the checkouts, but a kettle there will be staffed three Saturdays in December from 2 to 4 pm Also in December, service clubs will staff kettles at LCBO outlets on Lakeshore Road and Quinn Drive, and kettles will be out during the Sarnia Sting Teddy Bear Toss and Point Edward’s Christmas in the Village.

Kettle coordinator Brenda Dunn said there was a strong response to this year’s call for volunteers to fill nearly 800 two-hour shifts during the campaign, but more volunteers are needed.
