SaiPa still wants the Supreme Courts opinion on the former

Liiga-SaiPa is not satisfied with the decision of the Court of Appeal of Eastern Finland, according to which the company should pay former coaches compensation for illegal layoffs.

Liiga-SaiPa wants to continue handling the dispute regarding former coaches’ layoffs and salaries in court.

The company is applying to the Supreme Court for permission to appeal the decision made by the Court of Appeal of Eastern Finland in the fall.

The Court of Appeal of Eastern Finland stated in October that Liiga-SaiPa had no legal grounds to lay off the head coach Tero Lehterää and those who worked as assistant coaches Kari from Martikai and Tuomo Ropoa at the end of December in 2020.

According to the Court of Appeal’s decision, SaiPa should pay damages to Lehtera about 26,000 euros. SaiPa would have to pay a good 8,000 euros in compensation to Martikainen and Ropo.

received information about applying for an appeal permit from the Court of Appeal. The content of the application for leave to appeal becomes public once it has arrived at the Supreme Court.

The deadline for applying for an appeal permit ended on Monday, December 12.

The Supreme Court can either take the case into consideration or not grant leave to appeal, in which case the Court of Appeal’s decision will remain permanent.

According to the Court of Appeal, there were no legal grounds for the layoffs

The controversial layoff was the second layoff of the coaching trio. The previous layoff was due to end on December 31, 2020, but SaiPa decided to lay off the coaches again from December 28.

The layoff ended on March 27, 2021.

SaiPa laid off the coaches due to financial problems caused by the corona epidemic.

According to the Court of Appeal, SaiPa would have had grounds to lay off only those employees who were at work at the time the decision was made. This was not the case with the coaches.

SaiPa would not have had grounds to lay off coaches from January 1, 2021 either, because at that time there was no longer a temporary law that allowed temporary employees to be laid off.
