Simcoe Composite School Sabers football team improved to 2-0 in the Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk varsity football league Friday afternoon defeating Holy Trinity Titans 14-7.

“They’re a really good team, we’re a really good team, it was just really, really close today,” said Sabres’ offensive coordinator Owen Van Dyk. “They have a lot of good guys on their team, we have a lot of good guys on our team. I would not be surprised if we see them again in the championship game.”

“It was a grind the whole game,” said Holy Trinity head coach Tyler Backus. “It was a great game. We’re really looking forward to playing them again, hopefully.”
The visiting Sabers scored late in the first quarter on a quarterback sneak by Andrew Fekete. Holy Trinity equalized with a touchdown pass to Nolan Heeg in the final minute of the second quarter.
Fekete piled in for the game-winning touchdown with nine minutes left in the fourth on another quarterback keeper.

The Titans came close to scoring again, driving the ball to the SCS 12-yard line with about 3:30 remaining, combining a long 30-plus yard reception and solid running game, but failed to get a touchdown – or first down – on third-and-five. The Sabres’ offense was then stopped, and it was punted back to Holy Trinity taking possession near the SCS 40-yard-line with just over one minute left to play – time for one last drive.
Again, the Sabres’ defense shut the door and time ran out.
“We couldn’t execute as we wanted to on offense,” Backus said. “We were, at times… then we’d have little breakdowns, a little bit of miscommunication. But our guys played well, our defense really stood up, played a great game. We just had the wrong bounces. Really, that’s what it came down to. Hopefully we’ll see them again (in playoffs).”

“They (Sabres’ defense) helped us win that game – they really, really showed up for us at the end,” said Van Dyk, who felt the difference on Friday, playing against their crosstown rivals, was heart.
“We wanted it more. You could hear it on the sidelines, you could see it on the field. We just wanted it more. Everybody knows everyone on the other team… but at the end of the day you’re representing your school – that’s who you are playing for. Once you come off that bus, everyone’s focused on one goal and that’s to win. Everyone has the same goal in mind and that’s what we’re working towards.”
One week earlier Simcoe Composite had defeated Brantford’s Pauline Johnson 53-21 in their home opener, while Holy Trinity had won 27-6 in Delhi.
The Sabers host Delhi on Friday, Oct. 6 at 2 pm in the Mud Jug game. Holy Trinity is at home to McKinnon Park at 11 am
