Ryzen Z2 Go Was Below Expectations

AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Go processor performs 10% lower than the Z1 Extreme. The competition between Legion Go S and ROG Ally X is heating up.

AMD’s new generation processor Ryzen Z2 Gowas released as a notable option in portable game consoles. However, tests revealed that this processor offers 10% lower performance than the previous generation Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. The Ryzen Z2 Go used for Lenovo’s Legion Go S model lags behind the Z1 Extreme in the Asus ROG Ally X due to lower core count and clock speeds. Still, the large screen and affordable price advantage make Legion Go S a strong alternative.

Comparison of Ryzen Z2 Go and Z1 Extreme

Ryzen Z2 Go is based on the Zen 3+ architecture and offers a lower base (3.0 GHz) and boost (4.3 GHz) clock speed compared to the Z1 Extreme. Additionally, its core count has been halved and its integrated GPU is also a generation behind. These differences make a noticeable difference in gaming performance.

In the tests, popular games such as Black Myth: Wukong, Cyberpunk 2077 and Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut were examined. Z1 Extreme performed an average of 4 FPS higher in each power mode (15W, 20W, 30W). For example, at Cyberpunk 2077’s 1080p medium settings, the Z1 Extreme delivered 66 FPS, while the Z2 Go stuck at 61 FPS.

Lenovo Legion Go S attracts users by offering a large 8-inch screen and 120 Hz refresh rate with its Ryzen Z2 Go processor. Although Asus ROG Ally X provides higher performance with its Z1 Extreme processor, it comes with a smaller 7-inch screen. In terms of price, Legion Go S is a more affordable option than Ally X ($799) with its price of $729.
