Deadpool & Wolverine was released in cinemas this Wednesday, July 24, 2024. The sequel, which was praised in initial reactions as a “wet Marvel dream”, captivates its audience with a lot of meta-humor and a multitude of cameos with the hotly anticipated team-up of Wade Wilson and James Logan, was not always called that…
Ryan Reynolds reveals the rejected title of Deadpool & Wolverine
In February 2024, the third Deadpool adventure released its first trailer for the Superbowl. Previously known as “Deadpool 3”, the superhero fun also revealed its title here: Deadpool & Wolverine. After actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had built up a fun feud full of pranks and tongue-in-cheek insults over the past few years, the sequel finally brought them together again in a film 15 years after X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And this bickering rapprochement almost made it into the film’s title.
Disney
Deadpool & Wolverine… aka Deadpool & Friend
As Ryan Reynolds revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the leaked title was by no means a joking meta-commentary:
I have never told this story anywhere before, but … the Film was originally called ‘Deadpool & Friend’. I’m not kidding. The night before the Super Bowl, when we were going to release the trailer for ‘Deadpool & Not-Friend-But-Wolverine,’ it leaked. It leaked because of the sons of b***hs on the Internet. We looked at it and they [die Fans] fucking hated the title and then we didn’t feel so comfortable with it anymore.
Reducing Hugh Jackman’s character to an unimportant, nameless appendage aka “Deadpool’s friend” might have been good for a laugh, but Deadpool & Wolverine is definitely easier to pronounce as a final title. Together, the two mutants now want to take the cinemas by storm. The next few weeks will show whether the sequel can beat the most successful film of the year so far.
