Russia’s feared Soviet bomb: “Hell”

Russia is causing concern on the frontline in Ukraine by converting an old dreaded Soviet bomb – which can now create a crater 15 meters in diameter, reports CNN.
– It puts a lot of pressure on the morale of our soldiers. Not everyone can take it, says a Ukrainian soldier who is at the front, to the channel.

The old Soviet FAB-1500 bomb now has a devastating impact.

The FAB-1500 is a 1.5-ton weapon, almost half of which consists of high-explosives – which has been converted with a guidance system and gliding device. This means that the bomb can now be dropped from longer distances and with greater precision.

“Much more destructive”

The bomb is dropped from above by warplanes from a distance of about 60-70 kilometers – beyond the range of many of the Ukrainian air defenses.

– They offer a new and much more destructive option for many of Russia’s aircraft which also helps the pilots stay further away from enemy defenses, says Joseph Trevithick, who has written about the development of the bomb for TheWarZone, to CNN.

Creates anxiety

Recently released videos from the battle lines in the Donetsk region show the enormous power of the bombs as they hit thermal power plants, factories and high-rise buildings – places from which Ukrainians coordinate their defenses.

– It puts a lot of pressure on the morale of our soldiers. Not everyone can take it. They are more or less used to the FAB-500 now – but the FAB-1500 is hell, a Ukrainian soldier who is at the front told the channel.

The use of the bomb is said to upset the balance between Ukraine and Russia at the front, writes CNN.

– Previously we were only shelled with artillery. Now the Orks (Russians) have taken on the city more aggressively and started using Air Force assets, especially the FAB-1500, the soldier says.
