The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has approved the draft resolution to investigate the allegations that Russian soldiers have committed rights violations in parts of Ukraine.

33 member states voted in favor of the draft resolution, which was put to the vote at the UNHRC, headquartered in Geneva. While China and Eritrea voted against the investigation decision, 12 member countries did not participate in the voting.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, it was expelled from the 47-member UN Human Rights Council with a vote in the UN Security Council in April. Russian officials were given the chance to participate as observers in today’s vote on the investigation resolution, but the Russian government protested the draft resolution, claiming it was “politically motivated”.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the end of February, the number of people forced to leave Ukraine has approached 6 million. According to UN data, the number of civilians killed during the occupation is more than 3,000.
