According to Ukraine, Russia has fired several civilian targets in eastern Ukraine in Kharkov. Within a single day, more than 20 people died and another hundred were wounded, Ukraine says.
Street fighting has erupted in eastern Ukraine’s Kharkov since Russian paratroopers landed in the city on Wednesday, Ukraine says.
According to the Ukrainian army, Russian soldiers have attacked a local hospital, among others.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, has been the target of relentless air and artillery fire since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last Thursday. According to the Ukrainian authorities, Russian missiles have hit residential buildings and regional government buildings, among other places.
Numerous civilians are said to have died in the bombings. The governor of the Kharkiv region said on Wednesday morning that at least 21 people were killed and more than a hundred wounded in a single day.
At least six people were killed on Tuesday when a missile hit an administrative building next to Freedom Square in Kharkov. The windows of the buildings around the square broke and the walls collapsed. According to the Slovenian Foreign Ministry, the country’s consulate building was also destroyed.
According to many Ukrainians, the attack on Freedom Square shows that Russia’s attack is not limited to military targets.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi has accused Russia of war crimes in Kharkov.
– This is terrorism against Ukraine. There were no military sites in the square, nor in the residential areas of Kharkiv that were the subject of the fire, he said.
