  • Russian prosecutors seek 18 years in prison for reporter Evan Gershkovich

    The sentence against the American journalist Evan Gershkovich falls today. Prosecutors are seeking 18 years.

    The WSJ journalist is accused of obtaining classified information about the Russian tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod.

    According to Russian prosecutors, Gershkovich did this on behalf of the American intelligence organization CIA, which he, the Wall Street Journal and the American authorities deny.

    The former national police chief Anders Thornberg, who was suspected of work environment violations by causing the death of another, will not be prosecuted for the death of police chief Mats Löfving.

    This appears in a decision the Public Prosecutor’s Office published on Friday.

    “It cannot be proven that the suspect negligently caused Mats Löfving’s death,” writes chief prosecutor Lars Morand in the decision.

    Al-Qaeda leader Amin Ul Haq has been arrested by Pakistani authorities, Reuters reports.

    Ul-Haq is an Afghan citizen and is said to have, among other things, been responsible for the security around the terrorist group’s former leader Usama bin-Laden, who was shot dead in 2011.

  • Car drivers were threatened with a gun

    During the night of Friday, a car driver in Uddevalla was stopped by three masked men.

    One of the people allegedly pointed a gun at the driver, who then got out of the car and ran from the scene.

    The police later find the car crashed and empty in the immediate area.

    No one is said to have been physically injured, the police write on their website.

  • Unusual bacteria behind legionella outbreaks

    25 people have fallen ill after being infected by a very rare legionella bacterium.

    Most of those who have fallen ill are from Stockholm.

    According to the Public Health Authority, the infection is suspected to come from soil bags.

    – It is a serious disease that can cause severe pneumonia. Older people with an underlying disease are at greatest risk, says Magnus Gisslén who is professor of infectious diseases at Sahlgrenska Academy to TT.

    The bacterium is uncommon in Sweden, but is more common in Australia and New Zealand.

    The infection is transmitted by breathing bacteria into the lungs.

    The disease is cured with antibiotics.

  • The Houthis have fired drones at Israel

    During the night of Friday, there was a new rocket attack against Israel, The Times of Israel reports.

    Several rockets were shot down by US military stationed in the area. But a drone reportedly exploded over Tel Aviv, killing one person and injuring several others.

    Now the Huthi movement in Yemen is taking responsibility for the attack and that it was carried out in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

    The Houthis claim they can shoot drones undetected by Israel’s radar system. But the Israeli army believes that they failed to capture the drone of the night due to human error.

  • Stolen electric cross – threatened with a knife

    A 25-year-old man is forced to do an electric cross at a school in Tranemo during the night of Friday.

    About ten guys came up to him, one of whom shows a knife, and one starts beating the man with a baton and fists.

    They take the e-cross and disappear from the scene.

    The plaintiff is bleeding from the nose but is not in need of hospital treatment, according to the police.

  • Bromma Airport temporarily closes

    Bromma Airport will be closed for two weeks from Monday, Swedavia writes on its website.

    This is due to maintenance work.

    During that time, some departures will be moved to Arlanda Airport.

    Travelers are advised to contact the airlines for more information about their departures.

  • Young people are suspected of starting fires with fireworks

    During the night of Friday, the police were alerted to an address in Ronneby after several young people were seen moving in the area with fireworks.

    Once on site, it was established that a fire had caught fire in connection with a shed, but that it could be extinguished before it had time to spread.

  • Man to hospital after serious assault in Hörby

    A man has been taken to hospital after being abused by several people in an apartment in Hörby in Scania, the police say.

    The police were called to the scene and arrested two people aged 18 who are now suspected of serious assault.

    A technical investigation will be carried out during the day and more criminal suspicions may be added.

    A powerful explosion occurred in a recycling station in Kristinehamn on Friday night.

    – There were several alarms at 01.55 about a big bang and when we went there we could ascertain that a container had exploded and some rubbish was on fire, says Rasmus Eriksson, officer on duty at the Bergslagen police region.

    No injuries have been reported.

    – There must have been many people who woke up, because we judge that it was a really strong bang. The container is very demolished, which is probably due to some type of explosives, says Rasmus Eriksson.

    A large area was cordoned off and the National Bomb Squad was on its way to the scene in the early hours of the morning.

    The police have launched an investigation into the public danger of destruction.
