Since Thursday, August 1, protests against the high cost of living and poor governance have been taking place across Nigeria. A total or partial curfew has been declared in six states, mainly in the north of the country where there have been major clashes and looting. More than 700 people have been arrested. And on Tuesday, the police announced that they had arrested protesters carrying Russian flags.

Russian flags were raised in the northern city of Kano, as well as in Kaduna, Gombe, Jigawa and Zaria. Police said they had arrested 90 protesters who were waving the flags at rallies. Several tailors suspected of making the flags were also arrested.
On Monday evening, General Christopher Musa, the chief of defence staff, warned anyone flying foreign flags: ” We see that among those who are waving flags, there are many children, who have been incited to do this. We are investigating those who are behind all this, because we know where these flags were made and we will sanction them. The president has been clear, we will not accept that anyone disturbs the peace and tranquility of the country. »
Some are suggesting a mistake, as the colours of the Nigerian army flag are the same as the Russian flag. The Chief of Defence Staff has also warned against any coup d’état. A response to some protesters calling for the return of military rule.
