Russian death toll rises in the war

The names of 72,899 Russian soldiers who have been killed in the war against Ukraine have been confirmed by the BBC and independent Russian Mediazona.

In a previous update at the end of September, there were roughly 1,800 fewer names on the list.

The two media companies continuously review open sources to identify soldiers who have been killed in the war. It is likely that the true death toll is significantly higher as the statistics are based on open sources such as obituaries, information from relatives, media reports and statements from local authorities.
