Businessman Oleg Tinkov renounces his Russian nationality in protest against the war in Ukraine. Not necessarily known outside his country, he is one of the most renowned businessmen of his generation in Russia.
Now 54, Oleg Tinkov gave his name to the online bank he founded in the 2000s, Tinkoff, which has become one of the biggest financial and technological successes of recent years in Russia.
Oleg Tinkov is therefore the first businessman of this stature and reputation to renounce his nationality following the war in Ukraine and he does so in resounding terms. ” I don’t want to be associated with a fascist country that started a war with its peaceful neighbor and kills innocent people daily “, he wrote in a message posted on social networks.
Create a precedent
The businessman had expressed himself in April in a very virulent way against the war in Ukraine. Following these declarations, he had also been forced to sell his bank to an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, and this for a pittance: 3% of its real value according to him.
Oleg Tinkov lives in Europe in an undisclosed location. But he holds Cypriot nationality like many businessmen in Russia, and by his act he hopes to set a precedent: “ I hope others will follow my lead in order to weaken Putin’s regime and defeat it. »
