Several cities across Ukraine were completely or partially without electricity on Wednesday due to Russian airstrikes. In the neighboring country of Moldova, there was also a power outage.

It was reported from several regions of Ukraine that Russia carried out attacks at a fast pace and that the attacks have damaged infrastructure, such as energy supply.

In the Kyiv region, three people died and 20 were wounded in the attacks.

Mayor Vitali Klytsko said that explosions have been heard in different parts of Kyiv.

Electricity has been cut off in the Kyiv region, Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, Lviv in the west and the Odessa region in the south, among others.

In the Kyiv area, the water supply has also been interrupted in some places due to the attacks.

Due to the attacks, Ukraine has disconnected three nuclear power plants from the electricity grid.

Difficulties in hospitals

Russia has tampered with Ukraine’s energy infrastructure at a furious pace on the eve of winter. Before Wednesday’s attacks, the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that about half of Ukraine’s infrastructure has been damaged by Russian strikes.

The attacks have not only made people’s lives more difficult, but also severely hampered, for example, healthcare. The situation is particularly bad in the city of Kherson, from which Russian troops withdrew a couple of weeks ago. Before retreating, they had cut off the city’s electricity and water supply.

Many of the city’s doctors have to work by the light of headlamps or other additional lamps. The elevators needed to transfer patients do not work, and in some hospitals even key treatment and research equipment is out of use.

– Breathing machines don’t work, X-ray machine doesn’t work. We have one portable ultrasound machine at our disposal, says the leading doctor of Herson Children’s Hospital Volodymyr Malichuk for news agency AFP.

On Wednesday night, a Russian strike damaged the hospital’s maternity wing and killed a baby boy in the city of Vilnius.

The effects of the attacks can be seen as far away as Moldova

Russia’s airstrikes in Ukraine have also led to widespread power outages in the neighboring country of Moldova.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Suni, half of Moldova was without electricity on Wednesday. In Illansuu, electricity was restored to the capital, Chișinău.

Moldova also suffered from power outages in the middle of the month, when Russia had bombed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
