Several stores still have trouble with their systems after the weekend’s attack on the IT supplier Tietoevry. It is one of their computer systems that has been subjected to a ransomware attack, a form of digital blackmail.
– First the computers are encrypted and then a demand is made for a sum to gain access to the system again, says IT expert Marcus Murray.
Many are affected
Akira is most likely behind the attack. An anonymous hacker group that is likely to be Russian, according to Marcus Murray.
– There are indications that they could be Russian. As long as you don’t have the individuals behind it, I see that it is difficult to say with certainty. But with some probability you can say that they are Russians.
The exact extent of the attack is currently unknown. But according to Marcus Murray, many customers have been affected and Tietoevry has suffered great damage from the attack.
– It is serious and on a larger scale it is even more serious. I find that worrying, he says.
A problem with this type of cyber attack is that it can be both difficult to prosecute the culprits and to get help to solve the problems.
– The long arm of the law is not enough all over the world, says Marcus Murray.
“It’s a shame about them”
He emphasizes that Tietoevry is the victim of the crime – and even though many people are affected, it is the IT supplier who is exposed.
– You have to think about that. That it is an unknown actor who committed a criminal act and it affects their business. It’s a shame about them.
He says it is therefore up to society to give them the help and support they need.
– But it is clear that one wishes we could have suppliers with the ability to stop attacks before they have such big consequences.
– But you can actually have good security and still get hit. It is difficult to say that they are bad, I would rather say that they ran into a competent actor and they have suffered quite a lot of damage, says Marcus Murray.
