He said he was encouraging Polish armed forces to initiate “all necessary procedures” to protect their airspace, including the activation of Polish and allied aviation, after Russia announced Sunday that it had launched airstrikes on Kiev and Ukraine’s western region of Lviv.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging application that multiple explosions occurred in the Ukrainian capital after air defense systems began to repel the attack.

Serhiy Popko, head of the Kiev military administration, said on Telegram that Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed about a dozen missiles launched by Russia over Kiev and around the capital.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said on Telegram that there were no attacks on the city, but some 20 missiles and seven attack drones were launched across the Lviv region and targeted “critical infrastructure.”
