Since President Joe Biden’s debate failure against presidential candidate Donald Trump on June 27, many Democrats have stated that Kamala Harris should take over as the Democratic candidate in the election this fall. The International Court of Justice in The Hague will issue an opinion today on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The statement concerns the land areas of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip that Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war. The Palestinians consider all three areas to belong to Palestine.

Depending on what the court comes to, it could be the first time that the ICJ takes a position on whether the 57-year occupation is illegal or not.

The investigation has been ongoing since the beginning of last year.

The court’s position is not binding, but has great political significance.

In a separate case, Israel is being investigated by the ICJ after South Africa accused Israel of violating the Genocide Convention.
