Russia plagued by sanctions is holding a traditional economic forum

President Vladimir Putin will speak on the outlook for the world economy on Friday. Because of the sanctions, Western representatives will miss the opportunity.

Russia has held an annual economic forum for world leaders and business elite in St. Petersburg. This time, the event will not see Western representatives because of sanctions on Russia.

On the occasion starting today, instead, China, the world’s second-largest economy, which has not participated in sanctions, as well as smaller states, will have room. A Kremlin spokesman spoke at the press conference on the Middle East and Asian economic areas.

– Foreign investors are not just from the United States and the EU, a Kremlin spokesman said Dmitry Peskov stated to reporters on Tuesday.

Bloomberg: Some participants keep a low profile

President of Russia Vladimir Putin will give a speech on Friday in which, according to the news agency Interfax, he will focus on the international economic situation and “Russia’s tasks in the near future”.

This year, Putin will have no meetings with Western leaders or representatives of large corporations, as has been the practice in the past.

The St. Petersburg Economic Forum has been held since 1997. Its purpose has been to attract foreign investors and discuss economic policy.

The event has been compared to Russia’s World Economic Forum in Switzerland. The event in May was different from previous years this year, as Russian companies were not invited to Switzerland. This was the first time this had happened since the break-up of the Soviet Union.
