Hamas’s attack on Israel has been strongly condemned by a number of countries. Russia claims that the establishment of a Palestinian state, “side by side” with Israel, would be the best solution to the war.
– We do not agree with those who say that security is achieved by fighting terrorism alone, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The statement was made on Monday, the same day that Lavrov hosted Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Moscow. During the visit, Aboul Gheit condemned the ongoing violence, adding that he meant the violence “from all sides”.
Similar thoughts have been brought forward from China. US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has expressed disappointment with Beijing because China has not shown sympathy or support for Israel in its statements.
An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council during the night of Monday ended without any joint statement on Hamas’ offensive war. However, the United States and several other countries came up with strong, individual condemnations. Russia and China are permanent members of the council and thus have veto power.
