Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday signed a decree authorizing the seizure of American assets inside Russia – to compensate those affected by the Western sanctions against the country.

The decree will give Russian companies, organizations and individuals the right to apply for the compensation.

Many Western companies have left Russia since the country launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Those that remain may now risk having their assets seized.

The West has frozen around 300 billion dollars – the equivalent of more than 3,200 billion kroner – of Russian financial assets after the start of the invasion.

The question of Russian frozen assets being able to be used to support Ukraine is being discussed in the West.
