Russia has agreed with the military junta in Burkina Faso to build a nuclear power plant in the country.
Today, just under a quarter of the population has access to electricity, which is mostly imported from Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
The junta has ruled Burkina Faso since last September, and has since then approached Russia diplomatically.
In July, President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia will supply grain to six African countries, among them Burkina Faso. In September, a Russian delegation visited the country to discuss military cooperation.
Currently, South Africa is the only country in Africa with nuclear power. In addition to Burkina Faso, Mali can also receive Russian help with nuclear power. The Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom states that it has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Mali on nuclear power.
