“As a result of terrorist acts from the western border of the Rostov region, two unmanned aerial vehicles attacked the technical facilities,” the Novosjachtinsk refinery said in a statement.
The drones are said to have caused an explosion that is said to have led to a fire. Dozens of firefighters extinguished the fire and no one was injured, authorities say.
Videos shared on social media that have not been confirmed by independent sources show drones flying over refineries shortly before an explosion. Ukraine has not taken on the attack.
The region’s governor Vasily Golubev previously stated that drone wreckage parts had been found at the facility but did not provide information on where the drones may have come from.
The operations at the refinery have been stopped pending an investigation.
Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of carrying out attacks near the common border.
The refinery fire comes days after Moscow accused Ukraine of firing on Black Sea drilling rigs near Russia – annexed Crimea.
