Moscow claims capture of village in eastern Ukraine
Russia claimed this Thursday the capture of a village near Kurakhové, in eastern Ukraine, one of the sectors of the front where its troops are advancing against a Ukrainian army that has been in retreat for several months. Russian forces “continued to advance deep into the enemy’s defenses and liberated the town of Voznesenka” in the eastern region of Donetsk, the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily report of the fighting.
Voznessenka is located less than 10 kilometers north of Kourakhové, a town which had around 18,000 inhabitants before the conflict, and which is notably home to a large deposit of lithium, a rare mineral, nearby. The Russian army is currently at the gates of the suburbs of this city, located near a reservoir. Further north, the city of Pokrovsk, an important rail and road junction for Ukrainian troops, is also threatened with conquest by Russian forces.
Russian forces briefly enter the town of Kupiansk
Russian infantry briefly managed to enter the city of Kupiansk, located in eastern Ukraine and having already been occupied at the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, before being repelled by the Ukrainian army, local authorities told AFP this Thursday. This brief breakthrough comes as the Russian army has been advancing for months on the eastern front, advances which have particularly accelerated since October.
Located in the Kharkiv region (north-east), the city of Kupiansk had around 27,000 inhabitants before the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. “The situation was indeed very difficult” this Wednesday with Russian “assaults” repeated, the head of the municipal military administration, Andriï Bessedine, told AFP. The Russian infantry managed to “penetrate” the city before being “destroyed”, their vehicles having been “destroyed on approach”, he assured.
This Thursday, “the situation within the city of Kupiansk and its commune is under control, there are no Russian troops or equipment,” added Andriï Bessedine. The Ukrainian army also assured that Kupiansk was “completely” controlled by its forces.
EU finances joint arms purchases for the first time
The European Union announced this Thursday that it had, for the first time, financed the joint purchase of arms by the 27, most of which were for Ukraine. The EU had already financed arms purchases to help kyiv, but outside its budget, thanks to an ad hoc financial instrument.
“This is the first time that we have used the EU budget to support Member States in the joint purchase” of weapons, underlined the Vice-President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager, quoted in a press release. The EU has invested 300 million euros to help around twenty member states buy anti-aircraft defense equipment, armored vehicles and munitions, most of which will go to Ukraine at war, according to this text.
Biden pleaded with Trump for “support” for Ukraine
US President Joe Biden pleaded this Wednesday for “support” for Ukraine to his successor Donald Trump, during their meeting of just under two hours at the White House, according to his national security adviser.
The outgoing president “stressed that, in his opinion, the United States’ continued support for Ukraine (was) in the interests of our national security,” Jake Sullivan said at a press conference.
Trump picks Democratic defector critical of Ukraine as intelligence director
Donald Trump announced this Wednesday that he would entrust the national intelligence directorate to Tulsi Gabbard, a former soldier and defector from the Democratic Party, whose positions favorable to Russia have caused controversy.
Just after the Russian invasion of February 2022, she wrote on the social network on Ukraine’s possible entry into NATO.
