Russia continues devastating attacks across Ukraine – civilians escape Mariupol’s besieged city

Russia continues devastating attacks across Ukraine civilians escape Mariupols

According to Ukrainian rescue authorities, an apartment building in the northwestern part of the capital, Kiev, was fired on Monday morning. The firefight has claimed at least one death. There are several wounded, but information on the exact number of victims varies.

The fire was also said to have damaged a television tower in the town of Rivne in western Ukraine. According to local authorities, nine people were killed and nine wounded in the attack by Russian forces.

In addition, the Antonov aircraft assembly hall near Kiev near Hostomel Airport was fired upon. According to authorities, there are at least two deaths.

The attacks have continued elsewhere in Ukraine, including in besieged Mariupol.

Russian-backed separatists said 23 people were killed when pieces of a Ukrainian missile destroyed by air defense fell into the center of Donetsk. Russia said it was a “war crime”. The Ukrainian army, on the other hand, denied firing a missile at Donetsk.

A little relief in Mariupol

More than 160 private cars were allowed to drive off the humanitarian port city of Mariupol, a Ukrainian port city besieged by Russian troops, on Monday, city officials said.

It is not known how many passengers there were in the cars. However, it is a major evacuation after Russian troops besieged the city earlier this month.

In recent weeks, several evacuation plans through humanitarian corridors have failed due to firing by Russian troops.

According to Ukrainian authorities, 2,200 civilians have died in Mariupol, and Russian bombings have left the city without water and heating. Food stocks in the city have also run out.

Negotiations will continue on Tuesday

Negotiations between Ukraine and Russia will continue on Tuesday after a “technical break”, Ukraine’s chief negotiator Myhailo Podoljak said on Twitter.

Representatives of the countries negotiated on Monday via video link. Podoljak said before the talks that Ukraine is demanding an immediate ceasefire during the talks and the withdrawal of all Russian troops from the country.

According to Podoliak, only after these requirements are met can political differences in relations between the countries be discussed.

The UN estimates that nearly 2.8 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February. Most of the people have fled to Poland, a neighbor of Ukraine.
