Russia has added peace prize winner and press freedom activist Dmitry Muratov to the country’s list of foreign agents.

Russia’s Ministry of Justice claims that Muratov “has used foreign platforms to spread opinions aimed at creating a negative attitude towards Russia’s foreign and domestic policy”.

The branding means, among other things, that people or groups must disclose their sources of funding, and forces them to mark all their publications – including posts on social media – with a tag.

Dmitrij Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 together with the Filipino journalist Maria Ressa. Muratov is the editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
