Running out of inspiration to send a text message? No problem with the Magic Compose function, Google’s AI that responds to messages for you in Google Messages. A novelty that is finally arriving in France.

Communicating by message can be a real headache. Whether it’s because the discussion is falling flat, you’re looking for the perfect answer to seduce your new crush or you’re too lazy to restart the conversation, communication encounters many obstacles. How can you continue your exchange when faced with “ok” or “dac”? Fortunately, artificial intelligence is here to lend you a helping hand. Last May, Google announced that it wanted to introduce generative AI into Messages, the free SMS, MMS and RCS application installed as standard on most Android smartphones, with the Magic Compose function (“Magic Writing” in French). This allows the AI to write a response for you, taking note of the context of the discussion thanks to the last twenty messages exchanged, so as to be able to offer you several responses with different lexical fields – a bit like what offers the Google Keyboard virtual keyboard. Until now, this function was reserved for the United States but, as reported 9to5googleit is in the process of being deployed internationally, including in France.

Google Magic Compose: AI to the rescue

Magic Compose integrates into the new Google Messages interface (see our article). When you’re replying to someone, tap the star bubble icon in the compose interface. A list of suggested messages then appears, allowing you to choose from quick and personalized responses. These suggestions are based on your last twenty messages sent, including emojis, reactions and web addresses. Once you have pressed the answer that suits you, you can modulate it by choosing from several tones: Remix, Upbeat, Relaxed, Shakespeare, Lyrical, Formal or Short. Once the message has been chosen or modified, all that remains is to send it.

Who says generative AI, says data collection, especially with Google, which is a specialist in the field. The Mountain View firm wishes to be reassuring regarding confidentiality and respect for the privacy of users. She assures that “messages with attachments, voicemails and images are not sent to Google servers, but image captions and voice transcriptions can be sent”. Google then deletes the messages from its servers, without using them to train its language models.

According to 9to5google, Magic Compose is being deployed around the world, including in France, after being limited to the United States. However, not everyone can take advantage of it yet, since the function is currently reserved for users with beta versions of Google Messages and Carrier Services, as well as subscribers to Google One Premium. You will have to be patient!
