RuneScape creator announces release of his new MMORPG on Steam during an interrogation

It has been known for a while that Andrew Gower’s new online role-playing game Brighter Shores will be released on Steam this year. Now the MMORPG veteran has revealed the start date for Early Access during an in-game interview.

How exactly did the announcement go? While Brighter Shores’ Steam product page continues to display a “3rd quarter 2024” and there are no regular updates, developer veteran Andrew Gower is constantly releasing new info nuggets on his X-Account – most recently in the form of a 68-second in-game clip.

In the clip on X, you can see a player character entering an interrogation room from the lobby of the station and starting an interrogation with a modern-dressed avatar who goes by the name of Andrew. The essential question that needs to be answered: When will Brighter Shores be released?

“When it’s finished, of course!” is Andrew’s first answer. But the player character doesn’t want to leave it at that. He demands details, supported by a powerful bang on the table. Under increasing pressure, the virtual game developer admits that an MMORPG is a lot of work and that they probably won’t make it to the third quarter they’re aiming for.

No excuses, a date!

So when is Brighter Shores coming out? Instead of a final release, there will be a kind of early access launch at the beginning of November. The developer is aiming for November 5, 2024. In a previous post on X, Andrew Gower had already explained that they would consider a release with early access status until the optional PvP content is implemented.

Who is behind Brighter Shores? Fen Research is the indie studio founded by Andrew Gower in 2010. The award-winning MMORPG veteran was the lead developer of RuneScape at Jagex for a long time, a genre veteran that has broken various records over the decades (such as for the most updates or the largest number of registered players).

What kind of MMORPG is Brighter Shores? Brighter Shores will be an online role-playing game with a free-to-play model that will be released exclusively on Steam. The developers of the indie studio Fen Research are relying on a fantasy setting, a nostalgic iso-look and point-and-click controls.

The key features of Brighter Shores are as follows:

  • There will be three playable classes (Cryoknight, Hammermage and Guardian).
  • A large number of professions are planned, such as fisherman, cook, miner, lumberjack, alchemist, blacksmith, merchant and more. You can even become a detective.
  • The MMORPG is set to be constantly expanded, with story content in episodic format. Each new episode brings not only quests, but also new professions and regions.
  • The team has been working on Brighter Shores for more than ten years. The free2play MMORPG wants to finance itself through a premium pass, which allows you to unlock benefits such as player-to-player trading, name changes, exclusive armor dyes and unique character names.
